People would find it hard to believe that the wealthy, powerful, and seductive industrialist Kimberly Anne Foxglove had humble beginnings. She was born to a middle-class family in the Irish capital of Belfast before immigrating to Rhodesia (present day Zimbabwe), but then moved to South Africa after the change in the political landscape.
Her mother was a veterinarian and her father was an ex-soldier who turned to mercenary work to provide for his family. The former’s line of work exposed Kimberly Anne to anatomy and diseases, while the latter taught her the use of firearms and hunting at an young age and made her long for adventure. Though the family struggled, the hardships Kimberly endured made her a stronger individual and made her realize that she was meant for a life far beyond that of a common wage earner.
It was during the turbulent years of Apartheid that the young Foxglove saw how the weak are easily trudged upon by the strong and that strength was only achieved through wealth, and with large amounts of money comes true power. With this goal in mind, and combined with the lessons learned from her early life of near poverty, she became resolute as well as ambitious.
Being a child genius
- a phenomenon assumed to have been caused by a slight mutation in her brain that enabled her to use more of its functions, Kimberly Anne was intellectually and physically above her peers, absorbing knowledge and mastering skills at a rapid rate. Her talents guaranteed her entry into the country’s prestigious University of Johannesburg as one of its youngest students where she focused on business, medicine, psychology and chemical engineering.
Despite the bright future ahead of her, Foxglove did not immediately venture into the corporate world and instead joined the South African National Defense Force where she became the first woman to train with its Special Forces Brigade. She received her first taste of combat in the border war with Angola, serving both as a medic and a rifleman. She was later assigned to the military’s health service branch and then to the defense intelligence division.
After growing weary of the rigid rules and slow bureaucratic system in the military, Kimberly quit and joined the private military corporation Executive Outcomes where she learned how the machine known as the mercenary world runs. Upon their dissolution, she found employment in the ranks of the CIA yet turned down an offer to join SHIELD. After learning the intricate workings of the espionage trade, she resigned and ended up on the payroll of the scientific terrorist group Advanced Ideal Mechanics (AIM). It was during this time that Foxglove used her medical and psychiatric background to serve as an interrogator and a torturer before her value as a scientist was noted.
Her tenure with the AIM allowed her free reign to perform genetic and surgical alterations on human beings as part of the group’s attempt to create super soldiers that would match the capabilities of the world’s existing empowered beings and to combat their direct threats such as the Avengers. Her work was aided by samples of the Insania Virus taken from Starspawn remains. The early stage of the project was a disastrous failure as hundreds of test subjects were turned into inexplicable monstrosities. Foxglove personally executed each and every one of the monsters she helped create, though displayed no remorse for her hapless victims and considered them as nothing but irritating and expensive setbacks.
When AIM saw Kimberly Anne’s penchant for covert operations, they decided to make good use of it. One of her later missions was to infiltrate the multi-national conglomerate Saffron Corporation that specialized in pharmaceuticals and genetic research. This attempt at industrial espionage resulted in her marriage to Saffron’s young CEO Wilhelm Reinhardt and her subtle manipulations eventually gave her complete control of the company. Thanks to her uncompromising aggressiveness she was also able to keep her surname instead of taking her husband’s.
In contrast to Reinhardt’s humanitarian goals, Foxglove shifted Saffron’s focus to human experimentation and the development of biological and chemical weaponry. Her experience with mercenary groups helped her establish the corporation’s highly trained and well-armed security force that would become SHADOW. Even after quitting AIM, she maintained ties with her former employer as well as other sinister organizations that were willing to do business with her newly acquired corporation.
Even motherhood did not stop Kimberly Anne’s single-minded pursuit of scientific erudition, material wealth and power, and when her husband tried to bring her activities to the attention of the authorities, both Wilhelm Reinhardt and their daughter Erika died by her hand, both being shot dead without hesitation.
With all the power and wealth at her fingertips, Kimberly Anne thought she was invincible. All of that changed in 1998 in Gunnison, Colorado during a zombie outbreak started by one of Saffron Corporation’s viral experiments. There, she ran afoul of the Deadly Nightshade, who at that time was working for the Department of Occult Armaments of the Hydra organization. After losing her entire team, Kimberly entered into battle and easily lost against the more experienced and brutal mercenary assassin. Then for the first time in her career, the badly injured Foxglove was left helpless and learned the true meaning of fear.
In desperation, she injected herself with her own experimental virus (the only perfected sample of Starspawn blood she had developed personally). Despite the initial ill effects it had on her body, Kimberly was able to boost her abilities and fought Nightshade to a standstill. Somehow, she convinced her would-be killer to hear her out and the two grudgingly worked together to defeat the Starspawn Grendel, the demise of which allowed the two to escape the town before its destruction by SHADOW via a nuclear device.
In the aftermath of the Colorodo Miasma incident, Foxglove saw something different in the obviously Insania Virus-infected Nightshade. She had finally found someone whom she could treat as an equal. In turn, Nightshade admired Kimberly Anne’s tenacity and potential as an ally then agreed to be interviewed and examined by the red-haired field scientist. The latter learned the beneficial effects of the Amaranthus serum and successfully cultivated it from Nightshade’s blood, creating a new form of the vaccine which she first tested on herself. The result turned Kimberly Anne Foxglove into the new (or specifically the second) Revenant.
With her former adversary becoming her close confidante and favorite agent, Kimberly Anne’s Saffron Corporation and their clandestine subsidiary SHADOW Company are now stronger than ever. Following Nightshade’s example, she decides to use her true surname as her team callsign. Foxglove
- meaning “insincerity” in the language of flowers.
Although Foxglove has shown herself to be rather cynical on occasion, she is also a confident, pragmatic and professional businesswoman and scientist. She can become a trusted associate as long as people play their cards right, while turning her into an enemy is the worst decision one can ever make.
A person with no tolerance for mistakes and nonsense, she is over-assertive and unscrupulous when it comes to formal business dealings. She uses words as weapons to great effect and the orders she gives can literally mean the life or death of millions of people. Her actions are devoid of moral qualms and she deals with her enemies (both real and perceived) in the harshest and most inhumane ways she can think of.
For Kimberly Anne, life is cheap. As a scientist who spent much of her life studying the Insania Virus, she has no compunction in gathering and experimenting on live and helpless human subjects, including wounded enemies and even civilians that her team have “rescued”. This can be seen by the way she discards failed human experiments, sometimes personally delivering the killing blow but only out of practicality, not mercy, as well as the time she murdered her own husband and daughter to safeguard SHADOW’s interests. She deems her employees and clients as mere assets that should be exploited by the Company and when they are no longer of any use, may be disposed of as she deems fit.
When it comes to job offers, practically all potential transactions are directly scrutinized and approved by “the Chief”
- a title that has been attached to Kimberly Anne’s name, and her decisions are always based on the amount of profit that can be generated, the scientific knowledge that can be gained and other long-term rewards.
She used to be overly arrogant and bore a slight superiority complex but was humbled by her near demise at the hands of Marzanna Kriegvogel (Nightshade). Though the close calls and other horrifying experiences of her career have not dampened her hard-hearted persona, Kimberly however learned the advantages of having friends with benefits close at hand. Upon drafting Nightshade into the folds of SHADOW, Foxglove originally wished to see the two-hundred year old Revenant become her undying guinea pig, but has since grown attached to the raven-haired assassin both intellectually and emotionally. The two professional mercenaries were instrumental in forming Kill Team Edelweiss.
While Foxglove had earned the reluctant trust and cooperation of the other Edelweiss members due to the questionable nature of their recruitment, she is one of the very few people who received Nightshade’s unpretentious respect. She thought the sentiment was mutual until she discovered that she was experiencing a passionate yearning for the other woman. The notion of having been the first to receive the serum in the form of Marzanna Kriegvogel’s blood reinforced Foxglove’s possessive attitude towards the raven-haired Revenant.
That feeling of unrequited desire was further worsened by a green jealousy when Nightshade and her fellow Disinfestor Anemone became a couple. Unable to change the situation and staying true to her authoritative identity, Kimberly Anne remains passive and is satisfied to keep her relationship with Marzanna professional, watching the two lovers from afar while enduring the grueling task of putting her newfound emotions in check.
Abilities & Resources
Kimberly Anne is considered both a master alchemist and a physician having specialized in numerous courses such as chemistry, biology, pharmacology, botany and virology, and is one of the very few specialists in the field of xenobiology on the planet.
Being well versed in human psychology and capable of exploiting her sultry beauty to the fullest, calling Foxglove a master manipulator is an understatement, having the knack for analyzing the thoughts and feelings of people around her. She is able to use this talent in any situation where she is able to out-think and outwit those who cross her and when physical violence is not the first course of action.
If she is a force to reckon with while in the board room, then she is unforgiving when in combat. Her infection by a heavily modified version of the Insania Virus and then supplemented by the Amaranthus serum heightened her physique and when coupled with her military training and lethal array of weaponry, she is a dangerous opponent on the battlefield.
Being part of the Edelweiss, she serves as the primary intelligence analyst when planning operations and as the overall commander on a mission
-- something that puts her at odds with the more combat-effective and experienced Nightshade. As a scientist, she collects and studies samples and specimens on the field and when possible, she stores them for SHADOW’s analysis and use.
She is a trained medic in her own right, enabling her to provide healing to her teammates, and her position in Saffron and SHADOW allows her to give the Edelweiss nearly limitless resources. Her medical expertise makes her one of the two combat medics of the Edelweiss, a role which she plays alongside the more trustworthy Anemone.
As a Revenant, Foxglove bears no offensive capabilities. However, her most potent Warp-based power is her ability to release powerful emotion-altering chemicals with her pheromones which she often uses in conjunction with her strong persuasion and intimidation skills. Her body can also secrete a potent poison, something that has ended the lives of many who thought themselves lucky to have been touched or at the most, bedded Foxglove.
As a master of poisons and virulent plagues, corrosives and contagions, she may hang back beyond melee reach to lob specially-prepared toxic projectiles and handheld grenades filled with liquids and gases that can blind, disorient and eat away at her foes. She also uses her own version of the Insania Virus in combat, delivering them through the use of special injector darts or gas grenades and is capable of infecting most living beings while bringing those already under the effects of the virus under her control.
Her use of hazardous biological and chemical weapons are known to turn large mission areas into virtual poisonous wastelands
- the same hostile environments that Disinfestors thrive in. In her eyes, other living beings are an inexpensive commodity and she does not care should allies, enemies or innocents be caught in the midst of her operations particularly where poison gas, viral, incendiary and nuclear attacks are involved.
To this day, Foxglove maintains links with different armed forces and paramilitary groups around the world, mercenary companies and the terrorist organization AIM. She can call upon the aid of these various factions using accumulated favors and bribes. Her combat experience and familiarity with military structures qualified her to become the founder and commander of SHADOW Company. All she needs is to dial a number or two to summon men and deliver equipment.
As a leader, she prefers to lead and fight at the front. She is also a skilled strategist, a master of unarmed and armed combat, as well as a specialist in tactics and espionage. This sort of leadership is considered both inspiring as well as worrisome for those under her command. In the end, Foxglove could not care less, as long as she gets to do things her way and the mission succeeds.
