Cry Wolf: a HERO Television Special
Gentian owes her place in the Edelweiss to a deadly combination of an unhealthy obsession with explosives and the ability to manipulate reality and time.

Theme Song: “Dare To Be Stupid” by Weird Al Yankovich
Place of Birth: Lubin, Poland
Date of Birth: 23 December 1991
Being born to parents who were both avid computer programmers, it was of little surprise that Sebastien “Bastien” Eunika would choose a similar path. She spent her early childhood in the town of Lubin in the Lower Silesia province of Poland where she displayed a remarkable intellect. Seeing the potential within her, Bastien’s parents sent her to the pre-dominantly French-speaking quarter of Quebec in Canada to live with relatives and further her studies. Despite being accorded the best education the family could afford, they were disappointed to find that Bastien had no interest in school as she saw it as a waste of her time. Her frequent tardiness, absences and lack of motivation labelled her an underachiever among her peers.
Though she showed very exceptional affinity for mathematics, logic, physics, electronics and computers, the young Polish girl focused her attention on cable television, MTV, the internet, and most of all, videogames and Japanese manga and animation. With her ideals chiefly influenced by everything on a computer screen, she came to see the world as an unpleasant and lacklustre place and sought to bring to it her own ideas of excitement and adventure. Aside from becoming a hacker and a blogger, Bastien also began to dabble with danger as she learned how to build her own weapons and explosives thanks to illegal instructions found on the internet.
She stumbled upon her abilities while hacking into a bank system from her laptop computer, discovering that she can manipulate time and reality to a certain degree when inputting numerical equations and used it in more ways than one. She soon turned to pranks as a way of alleviating her boredom. The tricks she performed on other people were harmless at first. These ranged from the alteration of electronic records of various establishments and the sudden disappearance then reappearance (teleportation) of personal belongings. But then her pranks evolved to degrading and ultimately lethal when she claimed her first victim by literally making her victim’s computer explode after sending a reality-altering numeric code online.
The horrific extent of her power was truly felt when, after being humiliated in class and fed up with being berated by her relatives, Bastien first exploded every electrical appliance in her uncle’s house and burning the place down, killing everyone in it. Then She orchestrated the destruction of the school from her laptop, locking doors, exploding gas pipes and using a time-stopping stasis field to prevent the real world from noticing that was taking place. Despite the deaths of over a hundred people, she was never suspected of any wrongdoing. Nevertheless, the teenage girl left the town and became a freelance hacker and explosives expert for hire.
In dire need of funds, as well as for the sheer thrill of the attempt, she continued using her hacking skills and reality-altering abilities to steal funds and supplies from various financial and corporate institutions. She was ultimately able to hack into the computer network of the Saffron Corporation where she learned about the existence of SHADOW Company and their illegal operations. Just as she was deciding what to do with the newly discovered information, a fully armed police team ( actually Disinfestors in disguise) burst into her safehouse, being able to escape unscathed due to her wits and powers, but not without leaving a bomb that killed a number of her pursuers. While on the run, she was dragged into an alternate dimension that was a Starspawn’s Miasma.
Along with fellow abductees Marit Vinterwolffe (Anemone) and Shanelle Cadwalder (Marigold), the three cooperated to escape the Miasma. Her exposure to the Starspawn’s Miasma infected her with the Insania Virus and nearly killed her until she was saved by a dose of the Amaranthus serum injected by Foxglove after their rescue. Although she once attempted to steal valuable secrets from them, the Company decided to put her skills and abilities to good use rather than let her rot away as a specimen.
There was no need to force her employment as Sebastien was more than happy that working for SHADOW could finally allow her to achieve the same stunts and exploits as the characters from the cartoons and videogames that she likes so much. Most of all, she was going to be paid to do so.
She has since severed her ties with any relatives and considers SHADOW Company her only true family. As the Edelweiss’ primary computer and demolitions specialist, she was given the flower name “Gentian” which means “ingratitude”.
At first glance, no one would even imagine the Edelweiss demolitionist Gentian to be the dangerous killer that she is. Early impressions always portray her as a restless and carefree girl who is always full of enthusiasm and possesses seemingly boundless energy. Very friendly and open and always smiling, she can be one’s very loyal and reliable friend if one does not count her tendency to perform cheerful (though sometimes irritating) jokes on others.
Sebastien is best described as a thrill seeker who is never satisfied with the outcome of an task unless it is completed in the most exciting (and dangerous) way possible. She also views the world as a cartoon filled with infinite adventures and treasures to plunder, while her very existence is nothing more than a player in one massive videogame. This way of thinking extends to the decisions and actions that she makes including combat.
From a professional perspective, Bastien is one that rarely questions her orders even though she considers her job with SHADOW Company as merely a source of income to fund her hobbies. Unlike the serious-minded members of the Edelweiss, Gentian is remarkably easy-going, carefree, easily amused and maintains a positive attitude despite the extremely perilous situations she is thrown into.
In contrast to her happy-go-lucky demeanour, Sebastien is capable of deception such as the time in the Miasma where she made Marigold believe that she was just another cowardly and helpless victim. Her recruitment, training and actual combat missions with SHADOW has mentally and emotionally toughened her to the debatable methods of her employers and teammates.
As a die-hard fan of videogames and anime (a so-called otaku), Bastien tends to be very possessive of her computers and other hobby items, even going as far as setting explosive traps in her own quarters to proof it from any form of intrusion. When in battle, she prioritizes the safety of her gear over her own (and that of her companions!).
Although she is calm and composed when under pressure, there are times when Bastien acts brash, overly excited and proud when entering battle. Out of all the members of the Edelweiss unit, no one enjoys tinkering, modifying and (some say) playing with explosives more than Gentian. Her use of explosives is best described as indiscriminate (bordering on maniacal), much to the mortification of her own allies.
Bearing an openly positive personality, Gentian also acts as the only source of comic relief in a grim unit of highly-trained ruthless killers as she often cracks crude jokes and utter one-liners taken from various entertainment media. She is on good terms with every member of the Edelweiss even though Anemone ends up as the target of Bastien’s playful bouts of verbal sexual harassment (comparing Marit Vinterwolffe to a typical well-endowed anime meganekko or glasses-wearing girl) while she maintains a love-hate relationship with team member Marigold whom she enjoys annoying.
Abilities & Resources
Edelweiss Disinfestor Gentian possesses extensive knowledge in computers, ordnance and explosives, the latter making her the primary demolitions expert and saboteur of the group. This is reflected by her constant use of timed charges, mines and grenades above everything else. In lieu with her skill with explosives, she often carries not just one but two grenade launchers with her on missions, but prefers stand-alone hand-held versions rather than under-barrel types since she considers the former as easier to handle and much more accurate.
Though she is the youngest member of the team, her skill, courage and determination on the battlefield makes up for her lack of experience and the success or failure of a mission usually depended on her ability to manipulate time and reality and call in supplies when conventional means of logistics delivery was unavailable.
Gentian truly shines when using her peculiar ability which she herself coined as her Reality Hacker powers. She can do this in conjunction with mastery of numerology and aided by her custom-built wearable computer, a gesture-based user interface and heads-up display system which allow her to input complex mathematical sequences that affect the real world. Being able to place “anchors” in particular spots in time and space to serve as videogame-like “save points”, resupplying her team with equipment and supplies (by sending them to back in time to a way point), teleporting individuals and materials, and creating stasis fields to slow, speed up or stop time are just some of the stunts she has successfully experimented with.
As with most members of Kill Team Edelweiss, Gentian has had little contact with the superhuman community although she has made the acquaintance and remains on good terms with the talkative and unstable mutant mercenary Deadpool who shares some of the same hobbies. Amazingly, she also maintains contacts with both SHIELD and AIM after having been loaned to both organizations for her computer expertise.
