“Human lives and human memories. Take away all their meanings and they’re just imagined concepts and nothin’ more. If you’re gonna put meanings into their deaths then you won’t get anythin’ worthwhile. They get their true value in what everyone agrees upon. Money. Profit. Material rewards. The rest is just sentimental crap.”

Shanelle Cadwalder was raised in Auckland in New Zealand by a domineering, alcoholic single mother. The elder woman was mentally unstable and extremely resentful towards Shan as she was the result of a past sexual abuse. Shan’s mother was also a fanatical Christian fundamentalist who repeatedly hurled threats and lectures towards her daughter about eternal damnation which was usually coupled with the occasional physical punishment.
It was very probably due to her mother’s sermons about “fire and brimstone” that helped put the fascination of fire into the young Shan’s psyche. To avoid her mother’s constant verbal maltreatment and beatings, the then weak and timid auburn-haired teen became a resentful underachiever and spent much of her time away from home.
Adding to her troubles, Shanelle’s experiences in school were anything but cheerful since she was often bullied and ridiculed due to her unkempt looks. She was not one to take insults sitting down and got herself into countless fistfights, including an incident when she tore off another student’s ear with her teeth, leading to her expulsion, but not after giving the principal a profane remark.
After leaving her student life, Shan turned to crime, preferring to adapt to the ways of the street rather than stay with her mother. She stole what she needed by breaking into homes and stores, mugged and robbed people, picked fights and even worked as a drug courier just to provide for herself. Encounters with both criminals and the police failed to deter the young girl from her activities. However, a botched up smuggling attempt ended with Shan being caught and jailed.
She was bailed out by her mother which was something the young girl had dreaded and with good reason. That night, her mother went on another one of her drunken binges and was attempted to “purify” Shan with a red hot fireplace poker for her wrongdoings and being supposedly possessed by demons. In that moment of fear and desperation, Shan’s inert Warp powers surfaced and the flame from the open fireplace engulfed her mother, cooking the older woman alive until only ashen bones remained. Soon, the fire powered mostly by Shan’s emotions engulfed her house and half the neighborhood causing even more deaths though Shan herself escaped unscathed.
Unaffected by the horrific killing of her own mother, Shan vowed that she would never allow herself to be used or abused again, deciding to survive reality on her own terms.
Some time later, Shanelle went on a crime spree aided by her pyrokinesis although she had little control over the newly discovered abilities. During her stay with a local gang, she displayed an affinity for weaponry that allowed her to properly utilize, repair and later even build her portable flamethrower which she used for a number of crimes mostly paid arson or simply burning anyone she hated into crisps of charred meat.
Though she practically made a name for herself during her arsonist career, the police closed in and she was forced to run again. Using stolen documents, she was able to enlist into the New Zealand Defense Force under a fake name and three years younger than the required minimum age. Because of her obstinacy and apparent disrespect for authority, she never rose through the ranks but her stalwart determination and skill kept her in the service.
As Cruel Fate would have it, Shan was assigned to the Royal Regiment of Artillery’s fledgling chemical warfare unit which provided her with expert training in a wide range of combat and technical specialties and allowed her to hone her natural skill with very volatile materials.
It was in the mountainous terrains of Afghanistan where Shan honed her fighting ability to an uncanny degree. When the opportunities presented themselves, she would also go berserk and turn her custom-made flamethrowers on insurgents and neutral civilians alike, and for the first time, Shan felt truly alive. Even as her actions were slowing gaining the attention of the military police, her demeanor did not change.
During much of her tenure in the army, she spent a significant amount of time locked away in a stockade than on missions due to her acts of insubordination which oftentimes stemmed from her smoking, drinking and slight drug habit. Examples of such cases involved Shan hunting insurgents without proper orders, killing a gang of drug runners (and the entire village they were in) and stealing the drug money, and another scenario saw her break every bone on an officer’s body then badly burning him with brandy after he had blackmailed her for sex.
After spending some time in a military prison, she was released and dishonorably discharged. This newfound freedom allowed Shan to use her fighting skills and powers for profit. She served with a number of criminal factions, fought as a member of the Free Syrian Army, and even did a stint as a “cleaner” for the terrorist organization Hydra. Even then, many of her (then) fellow criminals found her fluctuating mental state and violent personality as more dangerous than the law-enforcers and costumed heroes they battled against. Because of this, Shan was often kicked out or she was left to fend for herself.
It was during a bout of depression resulting from a period of unemployment, that Shan found herself trapped in a Miasma where she reluctantly teamed up with fellow abductees Marit Vinterwolffe and Sebastien Eunika, the former who was initially put off by Shan’s hostility and stubbornness.
Exposure to the Insania Virus greatly increased Shan’s control over her pyrokinesis and along with her training, allowed the trio to reach the Starspawn that ruled over the pocket dimension and defeat it. The entire experience brought her very close to Death and yet she only felt aggrieved that Marit saved her, bringing her back to what she referred to as a repulsive existence. She and the others were later rescued (or rather acquired) by SHADOW Disinfestors.
Realizing the value of her intrinsic killing capacity and her Warp-enhanced pyrokinetic ability, Foxglove ordered Shanelle to be next subject for the Amaranthus serum. After her recovery and transformation, she was given the flower callsign “Marigold” which means “despair” and the hot-blooded girl remained on the payroll of SHADOW Company as part of Kill team Edelweiss ever since.
It still remains a mystery as to how someone described as atrociously pig-headed, hasty and psychotic could have been accepted into a military outfit that demanded discipline and patience. Nevertheless, Foxglove placed Marigold’s aggressiveness and tendency for excessive violence to good use by assigning her the Kill Team’s assault role where her penchant for close-quarters combat and coupled with her flamer specialization would act as a force multiplier.
Because of a financially-deprived and abusive childhood, as well as years spent fighting, Marigold became exceedingly independent, bellicose and assertive. She is bitter, discourteous, sarcastic, quick to speak her mind and easily irked by the slightest (perceived) provocations. Always displaying a scowl and making constant use of profanity, she is the worst choice for any job that requires diplomacy since she sees brute force and verbal threats as the only languages that others can easily understand and ones that she “speaks” very fluently.
She has no reservations about using derogatory terms even towards her own teammates. For instance, she calls Foxglove a “beaker” and an “MILF” despite the older woman being her benefactor, employer and combat commander. She reserves much of her (unwarranted) disdain towards Anemone, calling her “Fucking Four Eyes” believing that the bespectacled girl is trying to portray herself as a modern day fairy tale princess. In addition, she refers to Gentian as a “geek” or “Weaboo” due to her obsession with games and anime.
In contrast, Shan shows a surprisingly good deal of respect towards Nightshade whose inherent fondness for slaughter matches (if not exceeds) her own. Even the other Edelweiss members see them as two sides of the same coin. While one is silent and foreboding, the other one is loud and brash.
Among all the members of the Edelweiss, Shanelle is the only one who had dabbled in recreational drugs. Ever since her recruitment into SHADOW, she has come clean but only because her superhuman-level stamina easily suppresses the effects of such chemicals. She tends to drink heavily when going through her mood swings. Along with Foxglove, Marigold is also a cigarette smoker. She initially explains that she enjoys the habit but also claims that it gives her a “bad girl” look and that it serves as a good excuse to bring lighters and extra (flammable) fluid wherever she goes.
Though Marigold portrays herself as physically tough and mentally robust, deep inside she knows that she is just trying to compensate for the insecurities that stemmed from her sad childhood years. So far, she has only admitted such fears and weaknesses to Nightshade as she trusts the latter enough to consider her as the big sister that she never had.
For Marigold, money is equivalent to power and killing is not only her career, but also her way of life. As long as SHADOW Company gives her all the money she wants and allows her to lash out at the world that had given her so much grief then her loyalty is theirs.
Abilities & Resources
Where her love for killing is concerned, Marigold’s actions are considered both maniacal and foolhardy having scored hundreds of confirmed kills during her tour of duty of Afghanistan, and perhaps hundreds more while serving other factions in various conflicts around the globe. This kill tally does not include the deaths caused by her innumerable acts of arson, many of which were random rather than as paid and planned tasks.
Extremely autonomous and resourceful, she stubbornly prefers to go on solo purge missions, but has since (reluctantly) reacquainted herself to operate within an organized command structure and as part of her elite Kill Team. Like all Disinfestors of the Edelweiss, she is proficient with various weapons and tactics though she has a particular liking for flame and heat-based weapons that support her powers
-— tools of destruction that are banned by international laws but ones that terrorist organizations like Hydra and the amoral mercenary group SHADOW Company has no qualms in providing.
Despite her well-known recklessness, Marigold is aware of her limitations. To this day, she is still frustrated over her need to rely on actual sources of fire and heat to supplement her power rather than being able to create any on her own, hence her reliance on flame-generating arms during combat. Due to the short ranges of her favored weapons, she is well versed in closing the gaps between her and her targets, taking alternate paths towards her opponents to catch them off-guard and uses hit and run maneuvers when faced with overwhelming odds.
Being the Kill Team’s flamer specialist, Marigold is often relegated to “cleaning” duties that include the incineration of hazardous biological and chemical agents that could impede a mission and any traces of SHADOW Company’s wrongdoings. The latter includes erasing wayward experiments as well as all living witnesses or unfortunate bystanders.
Although she still wields conventional firearms, Marigold never ignores the chance to engage her opponents in close range bloodshed, whether it through blades (such as a fireaxe) and the chance to watch enemies horribly burn to death with her custom-built flamers and heat beam guns including a hand-carried heavy flamethrower and assault rifle combination (or nicknamed “combo” or "combi’) weapon built for her by Gentian. Being a trained chemist, Marigold gets to experiment with different forms of flamer fuels including her favorite mix with napalm, thermite and magnesium that is very difficult to extinguish and even burns when underwater.
Aside from her training, her life on the streets as well as her extensive criminal background granted her access to contacts, and therefore, information from shady individuals and organizations.
